Executive Director of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance (LIIA) and an adjunct professor of social work at the Adelphi University School of Social Work. Dr. Valenzuela works with an alliance of diverse community, religious, labor, and immigrant organizations in solidarity with all immigrants who are an integral part of our communities. He advocates support for all immigrants, affirms their legal and human rights, and advances the use of collective strength to overcome the voices of extremism, division, and hatred.

Special interests/awards: Has worked to defeat English Only bills and to provide services for the elderly; instumental in getting the 1995 Pauline Velazqeuz Bill #4939 signed into law; honored by Governors Cuomo and Pataki with community service awards; has been invited to attend the White House Conference on Aging.

Currently a doctoral student at Stony Brook's School of Social Welfare and a regular contributor to the NAPRHSW Newsletter. Interests: advocacy and empowerment of Latinos and other indigenous peoples. Has extensive experience as a practitioner, a teacher and a community activist. Before moving to Long Island, she served on the Board of AHORA, Association for Hispanics to Obtain Resources and Assistance. Catherine is also involved with the Social Justice Center at Stony Brook, and Women in Black. She is very proud of her son, who is a Sophomore at Iona College.
