Winter/Spring 2006
NAPRHSW NYC Chapter Update
by Juan A. Ocasio, LMSW, NYC Chapter 2nd VP
The New York City Chapter Interim Executive Board held its annual planning meeting on January 21, 2006 during which future plans and activities were discussed. The Chapter would like to announce that Executive Board elections will take place this March. To that end, notices have been sent out to all members in-good-standing that nominations have opened for all positions on the Board. Nominations will close on February 28, 2006 — all Chapter members in good standing should ensure to return nominations to the Chapter by that date. Instructions are included in those notices.
The results of the election will be announced during our upcoming Annual Meeting in April 2006, where we will also present the new Executive Board, which will serve through 2007.
On December 6, 2005, the Chapter held an outreach meeting at Columbia University with its students of the social work program. Doctor Evelyn Nieves, Adjunct Professor, spoke to participants about Latinos in social work, issues concerning immigration, and relayed her personal experiences in the
profession.
On October 10, 2005, the NYC Chapter held a lively event at Jake’s in El Barrio. Featuring poetry and live music, members and interested social workers enjoyed good company, raffles, and an overview of the work the Chapter has been doing.
Finally, the Board would like to publicly congratulate our own Gaspar Santiago, one of the founders of the Long Island Chapter, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association during the Annual Dinner Dance in November 2005. Felicidades Gaspar!
